The office of the President of Mongolia, Public Relations & Communications Division

Remarks by H.E. Mr. Elbegdorj Tsakhia President of Mongolia at the Reception Hosted by H.E. Ms. Enkhtsetseg Ochir, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the UN

Distinguished guests and dear friends,
Ladies and gentlemen,

Please accept my hearty greetings and warm welcome. I am truly delighted to see you all and enjoy your company tonight.

I have come to New York to reaffirm to the international community Mongolia’s firm commitment and eagerness to effectively contribute to solving the issues we all face today.

The world, indeed, faces an array of diverse challenges. Financial and economic crisis, fuel and food shortages, flu pandemic and climate change - all need to be addressed by joint efforts of all nations. The UN plays a critical role in addressing these challenges. The current session of the UN General Assembly is indeed another remarkable milestone on this path. Just a few days ago Heads of State and Government have had highest political discussion on the core negotiating issues on climate change. Mongolia stands for and will continue its active engagement in the preparations in the run-up to the Summit on Climate Change to be convened later this year in Copenhagen.

In two years Mongolia will mark the 50th anniversary of its membership in the United Nations family. We deeply value our friendship and cooperation with the UN. In the course of almost 5 decades, Mongolia has closely cooperated with the United Nations on a diverse variety of issues - non-proliferation and disarmament, promotion of democracy, human rights and literacy, special needs of LLDCs, climate change, peacekeeping operations and many others. As Mongolia boldly pursues human-centered clean development, I am sure, UN and Mongolia shall embark upon new avenues of cooperation. I am pleased to stress that the recent visit of the UN Secretary-General to Mongolia has reconfirmed our shared desire for enriched and sustained cooperation.

My country looks forward to further contributing to an effective international cooperation in addressing global developmental challenges. Having this in mind Mongolia has decided to run for the next term ECOSOC election in October this year. Mongolia would appreciate the valuable support from the member states.

Taking this opportunity, I wish to reaffirm you that Mongolia is and will remain your close friend and trusted partner in our collective aspirations for peace, democracy and development.

May I now propose a toast for:

- a stronger United Nations,

- for trust and cooperation between and among its members,

- for your good health and well-being, dear friends and colleagues.

Thank you.
