President Elbegdorj Receives Ms. Noeleen Heyzer,Under-Secretary-General of the UN and Executive Secretary of ESCAP

Tsakhia Elbegdorj, President of Mongolia received Ms. Noeleen Heyzer, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) today and discussed about the relations and cooperation between Mongolia and the United Nations.

President Elbegdorj expressed appreciation to Ms.Heyzer for her special attention to positioning UNESCAP as a platform for promoting regional cooperation among the Commission’s Member States to achieve inclusive and sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific and for supporting the Member States to make right strategic analysis and thoughtful choice.

“This year is the 50th anniversary of Mongolia’s joining to the United Nations,” Ms. Heyzer underscored “Mongolia’s position at the United Nations has been sustainably increasing.” She said that Mongolia is one of the regional powerful members and ESCAP actively cooperates with Mongolian government as a landlocked developing country.

Under Ms.Heyzer’s leadership, an ESCAP branch center of East and Northeast Asian region was established in Incheon, Korea and this creates a favorable condition for Mongolia to cooperate with other members on enhancing environmental protection, green growth, energy, transportation, and easing trade, developing infrastructure, information and communications technologies, reducing disasters’ consequences, and food safety. The center makes programs, projects and technical assistances of ESCAP more easily accessible for its members.

During the meeting Ms. Noeleen Heyzer highlighted “Mongolia is an Asia’s exemplary country that has been consistently implementing democracy and acclaimed Mongolia’s sharing of its experience with other countries and Mongolia’s persistent position on ensuring human rights.

In the end of the meeting, President Elbegdorj emphasized that Ms.Heyzer is the first woman to occupy this high position and he is impressed by her success and her reception of notable awards of the United Nations system of organizations and for consolidating democratic values. President Elbegdorj awarded Ms.Heyzer with the Order of the Polar Star of Mongolia in recognition of her contributions to the development of the social and economic sectors of Mongolia on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Mongolia’s joining to the United Nations.
